A native of Ravenna Ohio, Captain Matt Scarlett earned his commission in 1998 through Officer Candidate School.
Captain Scarlett’s initial sea tour was aboard the USS DETROIT (AOE-4), where he served as Auxiliaries Officer. Future assignments included tours as Assistant Operations officer aboard the USS COWPENS (CG-63), Engineering Officer on MCM CREW FEARLESS, Commanding Officer of PATROL COASTAL CREW CHARLIE, Flag Secretary for Commander, U.S. SEVENTH FLEET, Executive Officer of LCS CREW 206 and Commanding Officer of USS MANCHESTER (LCS 14). His most recent sea tour was as Commanding Officer of the USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2).
Ashore, Captain Scarlett served as the cargo officer at Military Sealift Command Europe, in Naples, Italy. He also served as the Far East Maritime Intelligence Analyst at the Ministry of Defense, London, UK. Captain Scarlett’s most recent shore billet was in Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Exercises, Education and Training and United States Senior National Representative.
Captain Scarlett reported to Commander, Destroyer Squadron SEVEN in June of 2023 to serve as the Deputy Commodore.
He holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biochemistry from The Ohio State University and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, graduating with highest distinction.
