Following his commission, he reported to MCM Crew Fearless and served as Auxiliaries Officer and then Chief Engineer for the last six months onboard. During his time onboard he completed two C5F deployments. For his second tour he served onboard USS CARNEY (DDG 64) as Damage Control Assistant and completed a C5F Anti-Piracy deployment. He served as Chief Engineer onboard USS PORTER (DDG 78) out of Rota, Spain, where he successfully completed two patrols in 6th Fleet and the Black Sea. During his second department head tour he served as Chief Engineer onboard USS ANCHORAGE (LPD 23), where he completed a MED/WESTPAC deployment.
Ashore, he served as OIC for Tuskegee University Naval ROTC, a part of the Auburn-Tuskegee Consortium. While there he earned his Master's degree in Public Administration. He served as the N74 Military Deputy, Advanced Diesel Course Supervisor and Perspective Engineering Officer Common Core Course Supervisor at SWSC Newport, RI. CDR Gorum's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award and various service unit, and deployment awards.
