A native of Freehold, Nj, Commander Dan O’Neill is a graduate of Villanova University, Villanova, Pa, and was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. He holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and a Master of Business Administration from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the 2022-2025 Surface Navy Association Board of Directors and a Life Member. 

He commanded USS Shamal (PC 13) from 2019 until 2021 during which he executed an independent patrol of the Caribbean, seizing millions of dollars’ worth of illegal narcotics in support of Joint Inter Agency Task Force South and Enhanced Narcotics Operations in the Western Hemisphere. 

Previous sea tours include an initial assignment to USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, where he participated in the 100th Anniversary of the Great White Fleet. He also served as Fire Control Officer and Ballistic Missile Defense Officer, through the Division Officer Sequencing Program, in USS Shiloh (CG 67) where he took part in Operation Tomodachi following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Additionally, he served as Weapons Officer, Combat Systems Officer and Senior Watch Officer in USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) under the Air Defense Commander to Task Force 70, Yokosuka, Japan. 

His most recent shore assignment was on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations for Director, Surface Warfare (OPNAV N96), as Warfighting Integrator and Standard Missile Requirements Officer. He also served at the Aegis Training and Readiness Center as an Integrated Air and Missile Defense Warfighting Tactics Instructor supervising Ballistic Missile Defense curriculum. 

He assumed duties as Executive Officer USS John Finn (DDG 113) in September 2023. 

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (5), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
