Senior Chief Gas Systems Technician Rusty D. Newburry is from Cassopolis, Michigan, and enlisted in the Navy in January 2000. After completing basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to Naval Station Pensacola, Florida, completing Airman Apprenticeship training. He then reported to his first command, Fighter Squadron 31, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. While serving as aviation mechanic and plane captain, we completed two WestPac deployments and embarked on USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72).

In 2001 attacks, he struck Master-at-Arms and reported to Portsmouth, Virginia, for Master-at-Arms Apprenticeship School. In January 2003, he reported to Naval Base Bremerton, where he served as Harbor Patrol and Base Security. His follow-on assignments as a Master-at-Arms include Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in the Navy Expeditionary Guard Battalion as a Guard for Detainees, USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) as a Watch Commander, Training Officer and Anti-Terrorism Officer, Naval Hospital Lemoore as Hospital Security Forces.

In 2011, Senior Chief Newburry demonstrated his adaptability and versatility by transferring to Ready Reserves and serving at Navy Operational Support Center Lemoore as a section leader. His commitment to service led him back to Active Duty in September 2013, where he cross-rated to Gas Turbine Systems Mechanic and attended Apprenticeship training at Surface Warfare Officer School Great Lakes, showcasing his resilience and determination.

His follow-on assignments included USS MOBILE BAY (CG-53) as the Main Propulsion LCPO. He reported to the Navy Recruiting District San Francisco in April 2018 as a Recruiter of Navy Recruiting Station Clovis and Talent Acquisition Group Fresno. He serves as Command Senior Enlisted Leader onboard USS CARL M. LEVIN (DDG-120).

Senior Chief Newburry graduated from the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy Class 257 (Gold Group) and the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course Class 24050. He has a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and Management from the University of Phoenix.

Senior Chief Newburry’s decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (second award) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (second award). Newburry has been on teams awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, Battle Effectiveness Award (fifth award), and Humanitarian Service Medal.
