Commander Matt Farrell is a native of San Diego, CA, and graduated from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, in 2005.  He earned his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL, in 2006.

A career Surface Warfare Officer, Commander Farrell served as Communications Officer and Training Officer aboard USS Milius (DDG 69), Combat Systems Officer and Operations Officer aboard USS Coronado (LCS 4), and as Flag Secretary to Commander, Carrier Strike Group ELEVEN embarked in USS Nimitz (CVN 68).   His most recent assignment was Executive Officer aboard USS Jackson (LCS 6). 

Ashore, Commander Farrell participated in the USNA LEAD Program as the 21st Company Officer and as Executive Officer at Afloat Training Group Pacific Northwest.  He holds a Master’s in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College Advanced Strategist Program and a Master’s in Leadership, Education, and Development from the University of Maryland.  

His personal decorations and awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (seven awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various campaign and unit awards.
