CMDCM (SW/AW) Scott Vlaming

COMMAND MASTER CHIEF, USS MICHAEL MONSOOR (DDG 1001)

22 February 2024 Command Master Chief Scott Vlaming is from New Lenox, Illinois and joined the Navy in 1994 where he attended Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Florida. Upon completion, he attended Interior Communications Electrician’s “A” School in San Diego, California.

At sea, he served as an Interior Communications Electrician onboard USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) and USS FIFE (DD-991), both in Yokosuka, Japan. After completion of Fire Controlman “A” school then close-in weapons system (CIWS) “C” school, he reported as a CIWS technician onboard USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and deployed in support of OPERATION “ENDURING FREEDOM”. As weapons department Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO) onboard USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49) in Sasebo, Japan he deployed to the U.S. SEVENTH FLEET Area of Operations. He later served as the Electronic Material Officer for Commander, Amphibious Squadron THREE (CPR 3) while embarked onboard USS PELELIU (LHA-5) in San Diego. Shortly after reporting to LHA-5, he deployed to the U.S. FIFTH FLEET Area of Operations. During his tour as Combat Systems LCPO onboard USS THACH (FFG-43), where he led the ship through its decommissioning.

On shore, he served as Fire Controlman “A” school instructor at Great Lakes, Illinois where he qualified as a Master Training Specialist. He also served as Commander, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE, Training Department Combat Systems Training Team Lead.

In December 2016, he graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy Class 202 (Khaki) and was subsequently selected for the Command Master Chief Program, completing the Command Master Chief Course in June 2017.
He served as Command Master Chief onboard USS MONTGOMERY (LCS 8) Blue Crew from September 2017 until February 2020, USS GREEN BAY (LPD 20) from March 2020 – September 2021 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron FOUR NINE (HSM-49) from September 2021 – February 2024.

He is currently serving as Command Master Chief, USS MICHAEL MONSOOR (DDG 1001) in San Diego, CA.

Master Chief Vlaming’s personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (five awards), and various service and campaign awards. He earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Sothern Illinois University in 2016.
