Captain Gorden Scott Wells is a native of Lorain, Ohio. He graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He enlisted in the United States Navy as a Machinist’s Mate in 1987 and served in the Machinery Divisions of USS ACADIA (AD 42), USS HALSEY (CG 23), and USS JUNEAU (LPD 10), earning his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Engineering Officer of the Watch qualifications.

Wells’ sea tours since commissioning in August 2001 from Officer Candidate School include Auxiliaries Officer and Combat Information Center Officer in USS JARRETT (FFG 33); Engineer Officer in USS PATRIOT (MCM 7); Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of USS DEFENDER (MCM 2); Operations Officer at Mine Countermeasures Squadron SEVEN; Damage Control Assistant in USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6), Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of USS ASHLAND (LSD 48). Ashore, he served as Code 935 Propulsion Department Head at South West Region Maintenance Center before being assigned as Assistant for Training and Policy (N72) at Commander, Third Fleet.

Wells is currently serving as Chief Staff Officer, Commander Amphibious Squadron ELEVEN in Sasebo, Japan.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Overseas Service Ribbon (7 awards). Other awards include Battle Efficiency (8 awards), Southwest Asia Service Medal (3 awards), Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Coast Guard Special Operations Ribbon with Operational O, and other various unit awards.
