Commander Burroughs enlisted in March of 2001 as a Machinist Mate (Nuclear) and later graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May of 2007. As a student in Annapolis, he received a double major in English and Political Science, and a minor in Japanese. He most recently completed the Naval War College’s Arleigh Burke Fellowship, receiving a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies.
For his assignments at-sea, he served as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer on USS ELROD (FFG 55), and the Operations Officer on USS DEFENDER (MCM 2). As a Department Head, he served as Operations Officer on USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD 41) and the Strategy and Plans Department Head (N5) for Amphibious Squadron SIX.
Ashore, Burroughs served as Executive Assistant to the Commander Middle Pacific and Commander Navy Region Hawaii. His following tour, he was an Instructor at the United States Naval Academy. Following his department head tours he transferred to the Pentagon to serve as a requirements officer and resource sponsor for Mine Warfare (OPNAV N952). He was subsequently selected to join the CNO’s personal staff as a member of his Strategic Actions Group. While on the CNO’s staff he also filled the role of CNO’s liaison to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. His final tour in DC was as Aide-de-Camp to the Secretary of the Navy.
His military decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals and four Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medals among various unit and campaign awards..
