CDR Sophia Haberman

COMMANDING OFFICER, UNMANNED SURFACE VESSEL DIVISION ONE (USVDIV-1)

22 March 2024 A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, CDR Haberman enlisted in the Navy in 1991 as a non-designated seaman and later struck into the Operations Specialist rating. In 2000, she was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and attended Texas A&M University earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology in 2004. She is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School where she earned a Master’s of Science Mechanical Engineering.  She also earned a Masters of Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting at the University of Phoenix by means of the Graduate Education Voucher program in January 2012.  She is qualified as an Anti-Surface/Anti-Submarine Warfare Tactics Instructor.

CDR Haberman’s first division officer tour was onboard USS SHILOH (CG 67) as the Strike Officer. She later fleeted up and became the assistant Weapons Officer on USS ROBERT SMALLS (CG 62). In December 2008, she transferred to Afloat Training Group San Diego where she was initially assigned as a TLAM Assessor and then became the Director of Surface Warfare Officer School Introduction for the Pacific Fleet.  

CDR Haberman assumed duties as the Weapons Officer aboard USS CAPE ST GEORGE (CG 71) in October 2012 and fleeted up to the Combat Systems Officer in October 2013. While serving onboard USS CAPE ST GEORGE (CG 71), she was selected as CARRIER STRIKE GROUP NINE’s Tactician of the Year in 2014.  In July 2015 she was assigned as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Administration (N1) to CARRIER STRIKE GROUP NINE where she completed a successful tour in October 2017.

In November 2017, she was assigned to Surface Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) Headquarters as the Warfare Tactics Instructor Program Manager. In 2019, she served as the Executive Officer of USS COWPENS (CG 63) facilitating a Service Life Extension Program availability and then aboard USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) where she deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Sentinel in 2021. In August 2022, she completed her tour at SMWDC as the Performance Analysis Director and the Surface Warfare Advanced Tactical Training (SWATT) Director. Commander Haberman most recently served as the Executive Officer at Unmanned Surface Vessel Division One.

CDR Haberman assumed command of Unmanned Surface Vessel Division One in March 2024. 

Her decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (4), Navy Achievement Medal (6), and various unit and campaign awards.
