Captain Stanfield is a native of Pittsburgh, PA. In 1990, he enlisted in the Navy and was selected to attend the Broaden Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training program. In 1991, he attended Old Dominion University, and in 1995, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and was commissioned. While attending the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kanas, in 2006, he completed his Phase I Joint Professional Military Education and earned a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management from Webster University.

His sea duty assignments include Director, Enforcement Coordination Cell assigned to Commander, SEVENTH FLEET, Yokosuka, Japan; Operations Officer (N3) for Carrier Strike Group ELEVEN (CSG-11); Commanding Officer and Executive Officer, USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD-41); Operations Officer (N3) in Amphibious Squadron Five (CPR-5); First Lieutenant in USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD-43); Navigator and Administration Officer in USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53); and Deck and Weapons Division Officer in USS FORT FISHER (LSD-40). He has been forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan, made numerous deployments throughout the world from the Western Pacific to the Indian Ocean as well as combat operations in the Arabian Gulf.

Ashore, he served as N46 ACOS - AMPHIBIOUS Readiness, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, San Diego, CA; Director, Mine Warfare Training, Certification and Analysis (N7),

Surface and Mine Warfare Development Center, Det Point Loma; Deputy Branch Head for Military Compensation Policy of (N130) ultimately being assigned as the Acting Branch Head; Financial Analyst and the Executive Officer for the Chief Financial Officer and Director of Special Operations Financial Management; and officer-in-charge of the officer recruiting station in Cincinnati, Ohio attached to Naval Recruiting District Indianapolis.

He is currently serving as the Chief Staff Officer, Naval Surface Group Southwest.

His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (x3), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (x4), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as well as various campaign, unit, and service awards.
