CDR Dana Canby hails from Catalina Island, California. His love of the sea drew him to the United States Naval Academy, and he graduated in 2006.
His first assignment was to USS COWPENS (CG 63) in Yokosuka, Japan. After completing the nuclear power training pipeline, he served as Reactor Electrical Division Officer in USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75). He and his family spent 2 years in Millington, TN where Dana was assigned as a Nuclear Programs Officer at Navy Recruiting Command before returning to sea as Operations Officer in USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50). Dana returned to USS HARRY S. TRUMAN as Main Propulsion Assistant, making two deployments to FIFTH and SIXTH Fleets and completing an aggressive availability.
Dana qualified as an Amphibious Warfare Tactics Instructor and subsequently served as the N8/N9 for Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center's Amphibious Division. Following a year attending the Eisenhower School, he returned to the fleet as Executive Officer in USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) during Patrol 22-1, 23-1, and her homeport change from Sasebo to San Diego.
Dana holds a B.S. in Chemistry from USNA, a M.S. Degree in Engineering Management from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and a M.S. in National Security Resource Strategy from the Eisenhower School where he was also a NDU Scholar.
He enjoys running, SCUBA diving, sailing, and trying to persuade his family to do all those things too!
