Captain Adam Cheatham was is a native of Maryland. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Imaging and Digital Art, he attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and received his commission in 1998. He also attended the University of Maryland, University College and graduated in 2005 with a Master of Business Administration.

Afloat, Captain Cheatham’s first assignment was in USS NASSAU (LHA 4) where he served as the Main Propulsion Division Officer. His next tour was in USS NORMANDY (CG 60) as the Navigator and Administrative Officer. He served his Department Head tours in USS GARY (FFG 51), the last forward deployed FFG in U.S. 7th Fleet, as the Operations Officer; and in USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2) where he served as the Blue Crew Operations Officer and is a plank owner. He Commanded USS STOUT (DDG 55) after first serving as the as the Executive Officer where he conducted a Ballistic Missile Defense deployment to Commander U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility as part of the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER Strike Group. His last sea tour was a 34 month assignment as the Commanding Officer in USS SHILOH (CG 67), where he spent two years in FDNF Japan as the Ballistic Missile Defense and Integrated Air and Missile Defense Commander for the USS RONALD REAGAN Strike group, followed by a home port shift to Pearl Harbor, HI.

Ashore, Captain Cheatham served as a Training Liaison Officer assigned to Afloat Training Group Norfolk. His subsequent shore assignments have included tours on the Chief of Naval Operations staff for Director, Assessment Division (OPNAV N81) as the Mine Warfare and Defensive Surface Warfare Section Head; the Chief of Staff of the Army Strategic Studies Group as a Junior Fellow; the Administrative Aide to the Secretary of the Navy; and the Director, Warfighter Strategic Integration and the Chief of Staff, both at Sea-Based Weapon Systems, Missile Defense Agency.

Captain Cheatham is a Joint Qualified Officer. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards
