Roger L. Young hails from Austin, Texas and enlisted in the U.S Navy in 1998 as an Electronic Technician. Over six years, he completed eight strategic deterrent patrols on USS LOUISIANA (SSBN 743). He received his commission through the STA-21 program after graduating from Jacksonville University in May of 2007. 

At sea he served as Food Service Officer and Ordnance Officer onboard USS RODNEY M. DAVIS (FFG 60); Navigator onboard USS BULKELEY (DDG 84); Weapons Officer onboard USS JAMES E. WILLIAMS (DDG 95); and as Commanding Officer in USS FIREBOLT (PC10), before serving as Staff Director in Commander Destroyer Squadron TWO. Most recently, CDR Young served as Executive Officer onboard USS BARRY (DDG 52), before assuming command of BARRY as the Commanding Officer. 

Ashore he served as the Training Department Head at Afloat Training Group Norfolk. He earned a Master's Degree in Operations Research from Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in 2013. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards), as well as various service and campaign awards.
