Captain Tumlinson enlisted the Navy in 1987, was promoted to Boatswain’s Mate Chief Petty Officer in 1999 and commissioned under the Limited Duty Officer program in 2001. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland, a Master’s Degree from the Naval War College and is a graduate of the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School. Additionally, he is an Afloat and Master Training Specialist.
His sea duty assignments include USS PINTADO (SSN 672), USS MCKEE (AS 41), USS DURHAM (LKA 114), USS SHASTA (AE 33), USS COMSTOCK (LSD 45), USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD 43), USS ESSEX (LHD 2), Naval Beach Group TWO and Amphibious Squadron TWO embarked in USS BATAAN (LHD 5), USS COLE (DDG 67), Amphibious Squadron FOUR embarked in USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3), USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93) and USS O’KANE (DDG 77). He reported to USS BOXER (LHD 4) as Executive Officer in August 2023 and assumed duties as Commanding Officer in November 2024. He was forward deployed from Japan for over four years and deployed numerous times to the 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.
Ashore, he served at Training Squadron TWENTY-THREE (VT-23), Surface Warfare Officers School, U.S. Pacific Fleet Headquarters, Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center and Afloat Training Group San Diego.
