Commander Rich Mayer is the son of a career Naval Officer and a 2006 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy. He subsequently earned a Master of Science degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2007.

At sea, Commander Mayer commanded USS HURRICANE (PC 3), forward deployed to Bahrain. Additional sea tours include Strike Officer, Auxiliaries Officer, and Navigator onboard USS LASSEN (DDG 82), forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan; and Operations Officer onboard USS PORTER (DDG 78), forward deployed to Rota, Spain.

Ashore, Commander Mayer served as a Federal Executive Fellow at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and as an instructor in the Command at Sea Directorate at the Surface Warfare Officers School. He also served as a Master Instructor in the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department and as a Master Skipper on 44′ Sail Training Craft at the U. S. Naval Academy.

Commander Mayer is most proud to be part of exceptional teams at sea and ashore whose extraordinary efforts have been recognized by two unit citations and three Battle “E” awards for excellence. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
