Lieutenant Commander Smith is a native of Damascus, MD. He attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating with a bachelor’s degree of Science in Economics and commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in 2005.
His sea tours include assignments as Main Propulsion Officer in USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70), and Operations Intelligence/Assistant Safety Officer, Engineer Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93). He also served as an Electronics Warfare Officer augmented with the U.S. Army in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from June 2008 – May 2009. His qualifications include Officer of the Deck Underway, Engineering Officer of the Watch (Gas Turbine), Tactical Action Officer (AEGIS) and Force TAO.
He separated from the Naval Service in September of 2009 and held managerial positions in logistics operations for Sears Holdings Corporation and Target Corporation, as well as manufacturing and project management for Lockheed Martin Corporation, where he earned his project manager professional (PMP) and Lean/Six Sigma Certifications. In May 2012, he graduated from the University of Florida with a master’s degree in business administration. After re-commissioning in the Reserves in 2011, he was recalled as a Full Time Support Officer in September 2014.
Ashore, he was assigned as a student at the Naval Command and Staff College, Newport, RI, where he graduated with a master’s degree in Defense and Strategic Studies and completed Joint Professional Military Education – Phase I. He served on Staff Duty as Executive Assistant to the Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, in addition to responsibilities as Foreign Ship Liaison Officer, Reserve Program Director and Deputy Port Operations Program Manager before serving as Executive Officer of Navy Reserve Center Pearl Harbor. He is currently assigned as Reserve Program Director for Commander,
Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific and as Executive Officer for Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific.
He is the recipient of various awards, to include Navy Commendation Medal (5), Army Commendation Medal (1), Navy Achievement Medal (2), and Army Achievement Medal (1).
