Commander Matt Farrell is a native of San Diego, CA, and graduated from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, in 2005. He earned his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL, in 2006. He holds a Master’s in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College Advanced Strategist Program and a Master’s in Leadership, Education, and Development from the University of Maryland.

A career Surface Warfare Officer, Commander Farrell served as Communications Officer and Training Officer aboard USS Milius (DDG 69), Combat Systems Officer and Operations Officer aboard USS Coronado (LCS 4), Flag Secretary to Commander, Carrier Strike Group ELEVEN embarked in USS Nimitz (CVN 68), and as Executive Officer aboard USS Jackson (LCS 6). He most recently served as Commanding Officer, USS Manchester (LCS 14) Gold Crew.

Ashore, Commander Farrell participated in the USNA LEAD Program as the 21st Company Officer and as Executive Officer at Afloat Training Group Pacific Northwest. He assumed duties as the Afloat Training Group Pacific Chief Staff Officer in January 2025.

His personal decorations and awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (seven awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various campaign and unit awards.
