A Native of Philadelphia, PA, CAPT (ret) Chris Barnes was commissioned in 1989 upon graduating from the United States Naval Academy.
His first sea assignment was onboard the USS BENJAMIN STODDERT (DDG-22) where he served as Communications Officer and First Lieutenant deploying to the Eastern Pacific in support of Counter Narcotics Operations. He later served as Main Propulsion Assistant and Engineer Officer onboard USS WORDEN (CG-18) where he deployed to the Northern Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. He served as Engineer Officer on USS MCCLUSKY (FFG-41) and USS SHILOH (CG-67) where he deployed three times to the Northern Arabian Gulf and the Western Pacific in support of Operation Southern Watch and Southeast Asian Cooperation Exercises. He served as the Executive Officer of USS MILIUS (DDG-69) where he deployed to the Northern Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served as the Commanding Officer of USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG-53) where he deployed twice to the Western Pacific as part of Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, earning the Battle “E” for CY 2008. Between afloat Command tours, he served as CTG 40.9, Mission Commander for Southern Partnership Station 09 onboard HSV2 Swift in support of US Southern Command Theater Security Cooperation initiatives. His most recent afloat command assignment, was as Commanding Officer of USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG-57) where he was the Air Defense Commander for Reagan Strike Group as well as Dawn Blitz 13 and Trident Fury 13. His last at sea assignment was as Chief of Staff at Command Carrier Strike Group Fifteen in San Diego, CA responsible for all integrated training and certifications in the Pacific Fleet.
His shore assignments include serving as a Seamanship and Navigation Instructor in the Department of Professional Development and as Midshipmen Activities Officer on the Staff of the Commandant of Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy. He served as Flag Aide to Commander Naval Surface Force, as a Staff Analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Defense Programs, Analysis and Evaluation, as the Future Operations Officer/Deputy Operations Officer at Commander, Third Fleet, as Executive Assistant to Commander, Third Fleet. His final assignment prior to retiring in May, 2019 was as Deputy Commander for the Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center.
CAPT (ret) Barnes has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from USNA and a Master’s of Science Degree in Finance from University of Maryland. He has earned the Legion of Merit (4 times), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious
Service Medal (three), the Navy Commendation Medal (5 times), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, plus various other personal and unit decorations.
After retirement, he worked for Booz Allen Hamilton as a Lead Associate and as Deputy Director Maritime Operations/Program Manager at CCSG-15 prior to assuming his current position as Executive Director Surface Advanced Warfighting School, Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center.
