Commander Robert N. Harris III, a native of West Hollywood, California, is a 2005 graduate of the Army and Navy Academy high school in Carlsbad, California. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Following his commissioning, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a subspecialty in Total Ship Systems Engineering in 2010. He has also completed a graduate certificate in Operations Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Afloat, Commander Harris completed his Division Officer tours as the Communications Officer on USS CHAFEE (DDG 90) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and as a Reactor Controls Division Officer aboard USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77) in Norfolk, Virginia. For his Department Head tours, he served as the Plans and Tactics Officer on USS ROSS (DDG 71), forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, and as the Reactor Electrical Assistant on USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70). His operational experience includes multiple deployments to the U.S. Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Fleet areas of operation.
Ashore, his assignments include service as a nuclear engineer at Naval Reactors Headquarters (NAVSEA 08) in Washington, D.C.; on the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examination Board in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, inspecting submarines and aircraft carriers; and at the Joint Interagency Task Force West at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
