Command Master Chief, USS Decatur (DDG 73)

25 October 2025 Command Master Chief Petty Officer Alexander Magbag is a native of Pangasinan, Philippines, with roots in Newport News, Virginia. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April 2001 as an Undesignated Seaman. Upon completion of Basic Training at the Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Seaman Apprenticeship Training and reported to his first sea command, where he struck the Ship’s Serviceman rating, now known as Retail Services Specialist (RS). Master Chief Magbag is a graduate of the United States Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 233 (Red Group), and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Park University, Missouri.

Master Chief Magbag’s sea duty assignments include USS RAINIER (AOE 7) in Bremerton, Washington; USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56) in Norfolk, Virginia; Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center (ECRC), Norfolk, Virginia; USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70); USS CROMMELIN (FFG 37); USS PAUL HAMILTON (DDG 60) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and USS GERMANTOWN (LSD 42) in Sasebo, Japan. In 2023, while serving aboard USS GERALD R. FORD (CVN 78) in Norfolk, Virginia, he was selected as the Retail Services Master Chief Petty Officer. He subsequently transferred to USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) and, in 2025, was selected for the Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) Program following the ship’s homeport shift to Yokosuka, Japan. His shore duty assignments include service as Naval Brig Staff at Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar, Pearl Harbor Detachment, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Assistant Supply Corps Detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee; and Supply Department Leading Chief Petty Officer at Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Master Chief Magbag is qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist. He is also designated as a Master Training Specialist and an Afloat Training Specialist. His personal decorations include four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, eight Good Conduct Medals, and three Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medals, in addition to numerous unit and campaign awards. As a newly advanced First Class Petty Officer, he earned the Army Commendation Medal while assigned to the Navy Provisional Detainee Battalion during a deployment to Camp Taji, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Desert Dawn.

In September 2025, Master Chief Magbag completed the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course at the Naval Leadership and Ethics Center in Newport, Rhode Island. He is currently serving as the Command Master Chief aboard USS DECATUR (DDG 73), homeported at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.
