USS BARRY (DDG 52) Command Master Chief Douglas Swift is a native of Standish, Maine, and a 1992 graduate from Bonny Eagle High School. He enlisted in the Navy in January 1995 and completed basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois, and graduated from the Aviation Structural Mechanic (Safety Equipment) “A” School in Millington, Tennessee, and Naval Aircrew Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in July 1995. Master Chief Swift is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy course. He holds an associate’s degree from Columbia Southern University, in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Swift served his initial sea tour at Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron (HM) 14 homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, June 1996 – December 1999, where he completed one deployment on the USS Inchon (MCS 12) to the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, and one deployment to the Arabian Gulf.
He transferred to his first shore tour at Helicopter Training Squadron (HT) 18, in Jan. 2000. His next sea tour brought him back to Norfolk to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron (HM) 14, November 2003 – May 2008, where he completed two tours to the Arabian Gulf.
Swift’s next tour was instructor duty at the Airborne Mine Countermeasures Weapons System Training School, September 2008 – April 2012. During this tour he was promoted to chief petty officer and qualified as a master training specialist.
He reported to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron (HM) 15 in April 2012 where he completed two tours to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations as the detachment leading chief petty officer. During this tour, in June 2014, he was promoted to senior chief petty officer.
Swift reported to Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet staff June 2015 and assumed duties as the command senior enlisted leader in September 2016.
