Commander Jonathan Long graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering. His sea tours include the USS CAPE ST GEORGE (CG-71) where he served as the Ordnance Officer, Assistant Force Protection Officer, and Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) Officer. Next, he reported to THIRD BATTALION, TWELFTH MARINE REGIMENT, THIRD MARINE DIVISION (3D BN, 12TH MAR) in Okinawa, Japan where he served as the Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer and led two detachments assigned to Battalion Landing Teams (BLT) 1/5 and 2/1, and acted as the Assistant 31ST MEU Fires Officer. It was during this tour that he achieved qualification as a Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Qualified Officer and served as the Operations Platoon Commander and Battalion Fire Support Coordinator/Fires LNO for 3D BN, 12TH MAR. He completed his Department Head tours aboard USS CURTS (FFG-38) as the Combat Systems Officer executing a final counter illicit trafficking deployment and ship decommissioning and aboard USS PELELIU (LHA -5) as the Training Officer. With EXPEDITIONARY STRIKE GROUP THREE, he served in the N-3 Directorate as the Fires Officer and ESG Deputy Lead Planner for DAWN BLITZ 15. Additionally, he completed a successful tour as the Chief Staff Officer for MARITIME PREPOSITIONING SHIPS SQUADRON TWO, permanently forward-deployed to Diego Garcia, BIOT supporting operations in four geographic regions.
Ashore, he served as the Western Regional Admissions Counselor and Regional Coordinator for the Naval Academy. Later, he went on to serve as the Navy Lead Amphibious Warfare Instructor for the Staff Plans and Logistics Division at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific supporting training, certification, and exercise support for ARG-MEUs, THIRD FLEET, I and III MEFs, and international coalition partners, to include the United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada.
CDR Long assumed the duties as Executive Officer, onboard Afloat Training Group San Diego in October 2019.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Unit Awards include Battle “E” (three awards) and Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 awards).
