18 November 2019 EVERETT, Wash. - Cmdr. Robert Biggs relieved Cmdr. Casey Mahon as commanding officer of guided missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114) at sea Nov. 15 during a change of command ceremony.

“As you’ve heard me say many times, the strength of our Navy lies not in the number of ships, precision of missiles, or capabilities of our radars,” Mahon said in his farewell address. “Our strength lies in the ability of these smart and motivated Sailors to get the job done, and this crew is a stellar example of that strength. No matter what I asked the crew of Ralph Johnson to do, no matter the difficulty, no matter the challenge, you’ve always showed the courage, stamina, and spirit to complete the job.”

Mahon will be heading to N72 Fleet Training Directorate at the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island.

Biggs, the incoming commanding officer, enlisted in the Navy in 1990. He received his commission through the limited duty officer program in 2002 and was later re-designated as an unrestricted line officer. On previous afloat tours he has served as the commanding officer and executive officer of USS Warrior (MCM 10) forward deployed to Japan, the combat systems officer and weapons officer of USS Princeton (CG 59) and air defense officer of USS Mobile Bay (CG 53). He served as executive officer aboard USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114) from May 2018 to October 2019.

“I am humbled to take command of Ralph Johnson,” said Biggs. “And look forward to serving the crew as their commanding officer. I am excited for what the next 18 months have in store and have no doubt that we will continue to build upon the foundation of operational excellence set by Cmdr. Mahon.”

Ralph Johnson was commissioned Dec. 12, 2015, and is the 64th Arleigh Burke class destroyer built by Huntington Ingalls Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Ralph Johnson, assigned to Destroyer Squadron Nine, is homeported in Everett, Washington.
