USVRON 1 hosts next generation unmanned systems training for midshipmen

PORT HUENEME, CALIFORNIA

Nine midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy and Navy ROTC units across the country had the opportunity to observe firsthand how Unmanned Surface Vessel Squadron One (USVRON 1) trains and prepares to deliver medium unmanned surface vessel (mUSV) capabilities to the future fight during a two‑week summer cruise with the command.

The midshipmen were given an inside look at the Navy’s advances in unmanned systems that will support the future of the Surface Fleet. Midshipmen observed the Unmanned Operations Center, the hub of USV control, engaged with command‑and‑control trainers and worked side by side with the Sailors pioneering the future of the unmanned fleet.

“USVRON 1 gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in an unfamiliar side of the Navy, and I’m thankful for the lessons, mentorship, and professional development that came with it,” said midshipman 1st Class John Partosan, a student at the University of San Diego.

Following the summer cruise, three midshipmen were offered “blue chips,” earning a reserved spot at USVRON 1 after graduation and commissioning as ensigns next year. The “blue chip” initiative in ship selection allows commanding officers to directly offer specific midshipmen a reserved spot in their command after commissioning as surface warfare officers and supports the integration of unmanned systems into the surface warfare officer career path.

The surface force is developing a cadre of officers uniquely skilled in both conventional operations and the cutting‑edge technologies that will define future naval warfare. This approach aligns with the Navy’s broader modernization efforts, ensuring that surface warfare remains a dynamic and competitive force. Ensigns assigned to USVRON1 will complete a year‑long tour focused on unmanned technology and operations, followed by a three‑year tour aboard a conventional ship.

“USVRON 1 is selecting top talent to lead the Navy’s unmanned future. We are delivering systems at speed and scale that will give the surface force the competitive edge to operate, innovate, and win in combat,” said Cmdr. Timothy Boston, commanding officer of USVRON 1.

Based in Port Hueneme, California, onboard Naval Base Ventura County, USVRON 1 leads the introduction and deployment of medium USVs, critical sensors, networks, and payloads to support fleet commanders and enhance surface fleet lethality.
