Balikatan is an annual exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. military designed to strengthen bilateral interoperability, capabilities, trust, and cooperation built over decades shared experiences. Balikatan, Tagalog for 'shoulder-to-shoulder,' is a longstanding bilateral exercise between the Philippines and the United States highlighting the deep-rooted partnership between both countries. Balikatan 22 is the 37th iteration of the exercise and coincides with the 75th anniversary of U.S.-Philippine security cooperation.

221219-N-XK047-1163 JAVA SEA (Dec. 19, 2022) – Fireman Kaden Banning welds a bracket aboard amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), Dec. 19, 2022. Hull Maintenance Technicians plan, supervise and perform tasks necessary for fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of shipboard structures, plumbing, sewage and piping systems. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) and amphibious transport docks USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P.
