Balikatan is an annual exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. military designed to strengthen bilateral interoperability, capabilities, trust, and cooperation built over decades shared experiences. Balikatan, Tagalog for 'shoulder-to-shoulder,' is a longstanding bilateral exercise between the Philippines and the United States highlighting the deep-rooted partnership between both countries. Balikatan 22 is the 37th iteration of the exercise and coincides with the 75th anniversary of U.S.-Philippine security cooperation.

USS Benfold (DDG 65) departs U.S. 7th Fleet after 10 years of forward-deployed service

David Huljack, commanding officer of Commander, Destroyer Squadron 15, waves farewell to the crew of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65) from the starboard bridge wing of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins (DDG 76) as Benfold departs Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, Sept. 29, following 10 consecutive years of forward-deployed service in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. Benfold is forward deployed and assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the Navy’s Largest DESRON and U.S. 7th Fleet’s principal surface force.
