Since the dawn of time, humanity has looked up at the heavens and wondered “what if?” One day in the not-so-far future humanity will make its return to the moon. They will make their first footsteps on Mars where they will look back at Earth and wonder “what now?” The roundtrip to Mars is expected to take around a year and a half. In this time, astronauts will have plenty to keep themselves busy, but they will have little to remind them of their home on Earth. Through augmented reality, Texas A&M University graduate student Renee Abbott has been able to deliver some of the comforts of home. Abbott is working side-by-side with the university, NASA and the United States Navy to make that idea a reality. The Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) is one of the few commands involved in Abbott and her team's analysis. The results so far have proved to be positive, and the team looks towards the future with hope.

Boxer Surface Warfare Officer Selected for Warfare Tactics Instructor School

Throughout the talented wardroom onboard Boxer, only one can be selected to receive the coveted red chip annually. Following the ship’s intensive sea certification period, Boxer’s Commanding Officer Capt. Brian Holmes presented his first Golden Gator red chip to Lt. Vinnie Delmundo, the assistant damage control assistant (ADCA).

USS Boxer Earns Combat Readiness, Excellence Awards

USS Boxer (LHD 4) recently earned seven Navy-wide awards for sustained superior performance. Boxer was awarded the Battle Effectiveness Award; the Maritime Warfare Excellence Award; the Command, Control, Communications and Information Warfare Excellence Award; the Logistics Management Excellence Award; the Self Sufficiency Award; the Force Health and Wellness Unit Award or Green ‘H’; and the Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Food Service Award.

Runnin' Hot: Getting it Done in the Pit

Since the inception of seagoing vessels, empires have sought means to dominate the seas. The goal has always been the same – to build a ship that is faster, more reliable and more capable. The British Royal Navy was the first to build a class of ships that changed the way seas were navigated forever. Their first of a kind frigate was to be faster than any sailing vessel at that time—powered by steam rather than wind and sail. Years later, the trend would soar across the world and bring forth a new era of transportation on the seven seas. Today the U.S. Navy has six ships with boilers, including the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4).

Boxing is Back Onboard Boxer

The Navy has always had a special connection with the boxing world. In fact, Sailors have been boxing aboard U.S. Navy ships for more than 150 years. When it first began, boxing or just plain "slugging" bouts as they use to be called, were often clandestine events held contrary to shipboard regulations and sometimes used as a means of settling personal grievances. These were more often than not settled in the lower decks, storage closets and other obscure places. The door opened for change in 1865 when the Naval Academy began a boxing program. It was treated as a casual recreation activity until 1919 when the Navy appointed a 30-year-old boxer from Baltimore named Hamilton Murrell Webb, affectionately called "Spike," to take over the program. With Spike at the helm, the Navy became a boxing powerhouse and went undefeated in dual meets for 11 straight years while capturing six national titles. Soon after, the sport became legal on ships with the endorsement of President Theodore Roosevelt who believed implementing boxing would increase morale. In no time, the events, known as “Smokers,” skyrocketed in popularity and spread throughout Navy ships. As years passed and the Navy evolved, boxing aboard ships slowly faded away, but it has not completely disappeared. Today the sport is thriving once again aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4). The training sessions held twice a week aren’t called “smokers” or held in a fan room, but once again, it has caught the interest of the crew.

Physicians Onboard Boxer Selected for Residency Specialties

Three graduates of the Uniformed Services University (USU) of the Health Sciences embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) were selected for their top residency choices while underway in the Pacific Ocean, Dec. 18.

More than 2,000 Sailors and Marines are currently embarked aboard amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4). But only one member of the crew can lay claim to the titles of both Boxer Sailor and Marine.

Letters from Pearl Harbor

Every year on Pearl Harbor Day, one Sailor, Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) Joel Perkins, assigned to USS Boxer (LHD 4), honors his family’s service in the Navy. This year, the Boxer crew and Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit gathered on the mess decks to hear Perkins share several of his grandfather’s letters to family during a commemoration of the 82nd anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks.

Since the age of sailing began, one person has held responsibility for keeping the ship on course and keeping the ship out of harm’s way. In today’s modern Navy, the safety of thousands of Sailors and Marines rests in the hands of the same individual – the helmsman.

Giving Thanks: Boxer celebrates Thanksgiving with Family and Friends

The smell of freshly baked pie, honey rolls, turkey and spice filled the air as a group of over 800 friends and family, brought together through service, gathered around the table to give thanks on one of the most celebrated days of the year, Thanksgiving. In order to accomplish a meal of this magnitude, a team of over 80 trained specialists worked tirelessly behind the scenes to provide a special holiday experience for the crew and their families aboard Boxer.
