Welcome Aboard Warrior!

Congratulations on your selection and assignment to pre-commissioning unit LENAH SUTCLIFFE HIGBEE (DDG 123)! You have been selected as part of the team that is the best war fighting ship in the Navy. You will establish the foundations upon which this warship will anchor herself for generations to follow. With your efforts we will be the fleet’s finest crew ever assembled!

LENAH SUTCLIFFE HIGBEE (DDG 123) is named after the second Superintendent of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps established in 1908. Born 1874 in Catham, Canada, she was 34 years old when she took on the mantel of Superintendent. She was one of the first 20 women to join the United States Navy, earning the tittle “The Sacred Twenty.” Lenah Higbee’s efforts are the foundation upon which our medical service is built today and resulted in her award as the only living woman to receive the Navy Cross. The ship’s motto, BELLATRIX ILLA, translates to “She is a Warrior” and describes the spirit of Lenah Higbee and the determination of the crew.
