USS Makin Island (LHD 8)
“Gung Ho”
Welcome Aboard!
Congratulations on your orders to USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8)
We are ABHC Sewell and AZC Pena, and we are the Sponsor Coordinator for USS MAKIN ISLAND. We are currently homeported at Naval Base San Diego, CA.
We eagerly anticipate your arrival to USS MAKIN ISLAND. If you require any support prior to arrival, please make contact with your assigned sponsor at your earliest convenience. Your sponsor will be able to give you more information and ensure you are set up for success. Some of the most common questions are below for your review.
Pre-Check in Requirements: Read your orders in their entirety. Refer to MILPERSMAN 1320-320 should you plan to move your family to San Diego, CA.
The Navy Lodge/Gateway Inn is located on-base. Personnel carrying items prohibited on Military Installations (Firearms, ammunition, certain chemicals, etc.) are advised to make arrangements prior to arrival. Lodging can fill up quickly, so please make any Navy Lodge/Gateway Inn reservation as early as possible.
Also, all personnel are HIGHLY encouraged to complete the Navy E-Learning “DOD Cyber Awareness Challenge” course prior to arrival, if not already completed.
Lastly, please read the information guide thoroughly for frequently asked questions and use MyNavyHR or download the MyNavy Family Application at www.applocker.navy.mil, apple app store, or google play store as resources for your permanent change of station.
CHECKING IN: Uniform of the day for members checking into USS MAKIN ISLAND is Navy Dress Uniform. You will check in at the quarterdeck onboard the ship; phone 619-556-4142. Please contact your sponsor prior to your arrival for assistance upon your arrival. If driving a personal vehicle parking is limited when vessels are in port. Recommend contacting your sponsor to discuss arrival time for check in and assistance required to carry personal belongings.
HOUSING RECOMMENDATIONS: San Diego offers a multitude of housing options including Base Housing, PPV, and the option to live out in town. With so many different elements involved, new personnel are urged to review the attached area maps, consider distance/driving time, and review rental and home-buying website to truly gain a feel for the San Diego market. Due to rising costs associated with changes in the market, we highly suggest conducting a financial counseling prior to signing a new lease. One of your best sources of information is your sponsor and Chain of Command.
PERMISSIVE TDY: Personnel reporting from command located outside of the state of California will be entitled to 10 days of Permissive TDY (House Hunting Leave). Refer to MILPERSMAN 1320-210 for more information.
WELCOME ABOARD!
Very Respectfully,

1. What is an Ombudsman? Every Command has an Ombudsman who is a spouse of a sailor at the Command. The Ombudsman serves as the liaison between the command and the families. The Ombudsman is the point of contact for the families. He or she can assist families with navigating through Navy life through resources and information.
2. How can an Ombudsman help me? Navy Family Ombudsmen are key resources for family members, particularly during deployments. Ombudsmen maintain current resource files with information on military and civilian community agencies that can help families solve a variety of problems, and successfully meet the challenges they face before, during, and after deployments. In addition to providing referral information, Ombudsmen can facilitate communication between the Command and family members. Ombudsmen may publish or contribute to command newsletters or maintain care lines, which have recorded messages with information for command families that can be accessed 24 hours a day. Ombudsmen can also assist families in contacting the Command for a variety of reasons.
3. What is the role of the COMNAVSURFPAC Force Ombudsman? The Force Ombudsman provides oversight and guidance for all the Surface Ship's Ombudsmen in the Pacific Fleet Area of Responsibility. You can contact the Surface Forces Ombudsman at (619) 301-6983 or send an email to surfaceombudsman@gmail.com
4. What is an IA assignment or tour? An IA is an Individual Augmentee. A Sailor may receive orders to go IA and this means that he or she will deploy as an Individual, not with their command. Sometimes an IA will deploy and be stationed with another branch of the Military. http://www.ia.navy.mil/
5. What is NFAAS? Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System. This is how the Navy will track your family and assess your needs during an emergency. https://www.navyfamily.navy.mil
6. How can I find out more about medical, dental or Navy family resources? Contact your Command Ombudsman. He or she will guide you to your resources.
