YOKOSUKA,Japan -- The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) arrived to its new forward deployed location at Sasebo, Japan, Sept. 19, becoming the newest ship to join the Forward-Deployed Naval Forces Japan (FDNF-J).

240814-N-NT811-1004 The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) left San Diego, Aug. 14, for Sasebo, Japan, to join the Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Japan (FDNF-J). This is a permanent change of station for the crew and family members. San Diego will replace USS Green Bay (LPD 20), also a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship, which has been forward deployed to Sasebo for a decade. Green Bay will return to the United States at its new homeport of San Diego. The forward presence of San Diego supports the United States’ commitment to the defense of Japan, enhances the national security of the United States and improves its ability to protect strategic interests. The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) will move to Sasebo, Japan, to join the Forward Deployed Naval Forces Japan (FDNF-J), the U.S. Navy announced today. This will be executed as a permanent change of station for the crew and family members.

SAN DIEGO (Apr. 4, 2024) – Amphibious Transport Dock USS San Diego (LPD 22) Sailors piloted a liquid metal jetting additive manufacturing (AM) process, operationally testing the Xerox ElemX 3D printer for the fleet. San Diego is the first San Antonio-class LPD warship to test the machine’s onsite AM features.

Believed to be caused by a German mine or torpedo, the armored cruiser sank in 28 minutes with the loss of six lives. The ceremony was organized by the Naval History and Heritage Command, which is responsible for the preservation, analysis, and dissemination of U.S. Naval history and heritage.
