220521-O-NR876-991 PHILIPPINE SEA (May 21, 2022) An MH-60S Seahawk helicopter, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 21, detachment 8, transports pallets of supplies from the Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Charleston (LCS 18) to the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Sampson (DDG 102). Charleston, part of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7, is on a rotational deployment, operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with partners and serve as a ready-response force in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Edward Navarro, of Riverside, California, is awarded Independent Duty Corpsman of the Year for 2018 by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED). The IDC of the Year award was established to recognize excellence in the Navy’s highly trained enlisted health care providers who operate aboard ships and submarines at sea worldwide without the direct supervision of a licensed physician.
