 USS ASHLAND (LSD 48), the eighth and final Whidbey Island class ship to be commissioned, is also the second U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name. USS Ashland was laid down on April 4, 1988 by Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans, La. On November 11, 1989, USS Ashland was launched, christened then commissioned on May  9, 1992 in New Orleans with Cmdr. Douglas W. Keith as the commanding officer.
