WELCOME ABOARD the finest ship in the Pacific Fleet! Congratulations on your orders to USS DECATUR (DDG 73), home ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. USS DECATUR is assigned to Destroyer-Squadron 31 operationally and COMNAVSURFGRU MIDPAC administratively.

USS DECATUR is the 23rd Arleigh-Burke Class Aegis Destroyer named in honor of Commodore Stephen Decatur and is the fifth ship in the U.S. Navy’s history to bear the namesake. The Ship’s motto is “In Pursuit of Peace” a tribute to Commodore Decatur’s legacy that is reflected in our crew’s pride and professionalism.

ATTRACTIONS

PEARL HARBOR NATIONAL MEMORIAL- Pearl Harbor educates and honors the public on the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor December 7th, 1941. It is one of Hawaii most visited attractions including USS Arizona and USS Missouri Memorial.

WAIKIKI BEACH- Waikiki has all the spots for Hawaiian beach life from snorkeling, sunbathing, surfing, and world class shopping and dining just 15 minutes from Joint Base Pearl Harbor.

HANUNAMA BAY- This is a protected marine life preservation area with beautiful clear water ideal for snorkeling surrounded by coral reefs and volcanic rock.

NORTH SHORE- One thing to do in Hawaii is surf and North Shore is just the place for that with 40 ft. waves come winter. You will find a peaceful respite from hectic Waikiki with scenic waterfalls and plantations including our popular dole whip and macadamia nut plantations.

GETTING AROUND

There is ample public transportation in Oahu, Hawaii. Bus and taxi service is available almost around the clock, as well as military base access Lyft and Uber. Numerous area maps, fitness, and event tickets are available for service members and families at the MWR building on base.


WHERE DO I REPORT

If the ship is in port, report in whites to the USS DECATUR quarterdeck. The officer of the deck will endorse your orders. Your sponsor will arrange for berthing and show you around the ship. Normal working hours are from 0700 to 1600. Daily quarters will be held at 0800. If the ship is at sea reporting personnel should report to transient personnel unit (TPU) located in Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. The telephone number is (808) 473-0686. Personnel attending schools will conform to the uniform policy of the respective training organization. Coveralls are not permitted off the pier.

1. What is an Ombudsman?
Every Command has an Ombudsman who is a spouse of a sailor at the Command. The Ombudsman serves as the liaison between the command and the families. The Ombudsman is the point of contact for the families. He or she can assist families with navigating through Navy life through resources and information.

2. How can an Ombudsman help me?
Navy Family Ombudsmen are key resources for family members, particularly during deployments. Ombudsmen maintain current resource files with information on military and civilian community agencies that can help families solve a variety of problems, and successfully meet the challenges they face before, during, and after deployments. In addition to providing referral information, Ombudsmen can facilitate communication between the Command and family members. Ombudsmen may publish or contribute to command newsletters or maintain care lines, which have recorded messages with information for command families that can be accessed 24 hours a day. Ombudsmen can also assist families in contacting the Command for a variety of reasons.

3. What is the role of the COMNAVSURFPAC Force Ombudsman?

4. What is an IA assignment or tour?
An IA is an Individual Augmentee. A Sailor may receive orders to go IA and this means that he or she will deploy as an Individual, not with their command. Sometimes an IA will deploy and be stationed with another branch of the Military. http://www.ia.navy.mil/
