Message From the CO

02 MARCH 2024

From: Commanding Officer, USS McCampbell (DDG 85)

To: Prospective Shipmates and Friends of the USS McCampbell

Subj: WELCOME ABOARD

Congratulations on receiving orders to USS McCampbell (DDG 85).

We are Command Fleet Activities Yokosuka’s latest and greatest addition. If you have received orders to USS McCampbell (DDG 85), please email sponsor@ddg85.navy.mil and we will provide you with a sponsor to help make your transition as smooth as possible. We are excited to have you on board and welcome you to the McCampbell Hellcats!

The McCampbell crew is comprised of the United States Navy’s most determined and dedicated sailors. Over the course of the last five years, the strenuous work and collaborative efforts of the crew allowed for not one, but TWO successful homeport shifts across the Pacific Ocean between Command Fleet Activities Yokosuka (Japan) and Naval Station Everett (Washington). As we settle back into Japan, we are proud to have YOU join us and add to the fighting spirit onboard the USS McCampbell.

Our fighting spirit and readiness to fight stems from our namesake, Captain David S. McCampbell, USN. CAPT McCampbell was the Navy’s first and all-time leading ACE with 34 aerial victories during WWII. He commanded Air Group 15, also known as the “Fabled Fifteen,” which destroyed more enemy planes and sank more enemy shipping than any other during the War in the Pacific. McCampbell received a Medal of Honor in October of 1944, after shooting down nine enemy planes in one mission. In doing so set a single mission aerial combat record the Navy’s first and all-time leading ACE.

The legacy of the Hellcats, named for the fighter aircraft that Captain McCampbell flew, lives out through you. You have made the honorable and courageous choice to serve and defend your country, and will be doing so actively on a forward deployed Naval Destroyer. Our forward presence in Eastern Asia showcases our Nation's interests and intent to serve and protect our people. I am confident in the abilities of the ship and her crew that we are best fitted Destroyer the Navy has for this role.

We are here to help you in any way you need. Please contact your sponsor or our Ombudsman’s, Mrs. Lily Burgoyne, at Mccampbell.ombudsman@gmail.com.

Irassshaimase (Welcome) to your new home. Relentless in Battle!
